Double Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge is set to make a comeback to the Berlin Marathon on 24 September 2023, aiming to become the first athlete in history to win the race five times.

The Marathon world-record holder announced his return through a video posted on his social media pages, Kipchoge will use the race as part of his preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

At the Berlin Marathon on September 24, 2023, Kipchoge will be in search of his fifth title in a competition in which he has utterly dominated since he first competed back in 2015.

The two-time Olympic marathon champion has won four titles at this World Marathon Majors event and has become synonymous with success whenever he competes at that specific meeting.

Kipchoge, 38, clocked 2:01:09 in Berlin last year to crush his previous world record by about 30 seconds. He is aiming to complete a hat trick of Olympic wins next year, having won marathon gold in the previous two Games.

“My run has taken me across the world,” Kipchoge said in the video posted on social media. “Along the way, there are ups and downs. And right now I run toward Paris 2024. But to achieve what inspires me in Paris, I must return to my special place. Back to Berlin.”

Most notably, Kipchoge has smashed the world record at the Berlin Marathon on two occasions, clocking 2:01:39 in 2017 before annihilating it last year with a new world record of 2:01:09.

Kipchoge is a 10-time winner of marathon majors, including four victories apiece at Berlin and London.

Berlin is considered one of the world’s fastest marathon courses, due to traditionally cool conditions plus flat, well-maintained roads.
