Waiguru faces impeachment over KEMRI land controversy

Kirinyaga Governor – Anne Waiguru Waiganjo, faces impeachment if she fails to release the title deed for the now controversial KEMRI land which is supposed to host an ultra-modern teaching, research and referral medical centre.

According to County Assembly Leader of Majority, Kamau Murango, all the MCAs want is for the land tussle to end soon so that the building the facility can commence soon.

“The governor’s reason that she can’t produce the title deed without the agreement with KEMRI is not reason enough,” Murango said, insisting on having the title deed at the County Assembly so that they can hand it over to KEMRI for the project.

The lawmaker, who represents Mutithi Ward where the project is supposed to be located, termed the Governor’s demand before giving the title as absurd.

KSh60 million has been spent to erect a perimeter wall on the 100-acre piece of land by KEMRI after they were given the nod by the then governor – Joseph Ndathi.

The facility is intended to serve the vast Central, Eastern and North Eastern regions once it is complete as a home to a postgraduate university, research centre, a modern hospital and state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory.

At the same time, the MCAs have demanded the release of KSh70 million, monies which the county had allocated for the bursary kitty before the end of this financial year.
