Kenya’s rugby national sevens team Shujaa arrived in France ahead of the much-awaited Toulouse 7s which will be taking place from 12-14 May 2023.
The tournament will be marking the penultimate round of the 2023 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
Shujaa will kick off the assignment with a fixture against Uruguay on Friday before tackling New Zealand in a Pool A fixture for the Damian McGrath-coached side.
They finish their pool assignments the next day with a clash against Canada as they seek to avoid relegation with only one leg remaining.
Shujaa assistant coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua was optimistic the national team is in a better position to avoid relegation in this weekend’s Toulouse Sevens tournament.
Wambua who was speaking before the team departed for France revealed the team has been inspired by former skipper Andrew Amonde and flyhalf Eden Agero.
The duo are part of the technical bench and have been in camp with the team for close to a month, heading to the Toulouse assignment.
Wambua further said the duo have helped lift the mood in camp apart from their contribution to some technical aspects of the game.
Shujaa are positioned 13th having accumulated 37 points having failed to make it to the quarter-finals stage this season.
If by any chance the Damian McGrath-coached side fails to finish in the top ten and accumulate enough points a relegation playoff competition will await them in the London 7s.
Four top-tier teams will be competing to take the single ticket that will guarantee safety in the Series.
