Out of the 31,000 public schools in the nation, just 5,226 have title deeds.
This was revealed by Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome on Wednesday during a question-and-answer session with senators.

Wahome responded when Kirinyaga Senator James Murango asked about the status of title deed issuance nationwide as well as in the county. 5,799 schools are in line to obtain their title documents and have reservation files, according to the compilation made public by Wahome.

Title deeds were being issued as a result of a 2019 audit that made clear how important it is to give these vital documents to public schools. Wahome regretted the slow progress of the procedure despite her best efforts, citing a number of obstacles.

She did, however, reassure the senators that her Ministry has taken action to deal with the matter as soon as possible.

“The ministry has put in place to resolve the issue. The titling of public land has been going on over the years, but the progress has been slow, uncoordinated, and without guidelines,” the spokeswoman stated.

Public schools around the nation are often targets and prone to land grabbing since they lack title deeds. But over time, successive administrations have worked to secure the property these schools are located on, keeping them safe from developers and granting legal ownership status.

During the previous administration of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, the Lands Ministry implemented substantial land reforms as part of the steps meant to solve the issue. These reforms included the entire digitization of land records.
