With the African Union Commission elections edging closer, Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, has arrived in Addis Ababa to lead the final phase of campaigning for Raila Odinga’s bid for Chairperson of the AUC.
Mudavadi’s visit, scheduled from 12 and 17 February this month,is a strategic effort to galvanize support and secure Raila’s election to the pivotal continental position.
The race for the AUC Chairperson has reached a critical juncture, with the outcome set to influence Africa’s future political, economic, and diplomatic landscape. Raila Odinga, the former Prime Minister of Kenya, is vying to become the continent’s leading voice in decision-making and regional development.
If successful, his leadership could elevate Kenya’s influence at the African Union, strengthening its standing among member states and on the global stage.
Mudavadi, who is spearheading the campaign, emphasized the importance of this election, not just for Kenya, but for the continent at large.
“Raila Odinga’s leadership at the African Union Commission will not only enhance Kenya’s influence within Africa, but it will also bring to the forefront a voice that understands the complex challenges facing our continent,” Mudavadi said in a statement before his departure.
“Raila’s agenda will focus on the transformative issues of infrastructure development, economic integration, youth empowerment, and climate action – all of which are critical to Africa’s future.

During his time in Addis Ababa, Mudavadi will attend the 46th Session of the Executive Council, which takes place from 12-14 February, where African Foreign Ministers will cast their votes to elect the new AUC commissioners.
The session will be followed by the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, where discussions will center on key issues affecting the African continent, with the theme of “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations” taking center stage.
Raila’s potential win would position Kenya at the helm of a body that is crucial for shaping Africa’s future. His tenure as AUC Chair would prioritize vital continental issues such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), economic transformation, agricultural innovation, and financial independence for African nations. These areas, Mudavadi noted, are critical for fostering intra-Africa trade and achieving sustainable development across the continent.
Pundits and experts in African diplomacy are watching keenly as the election approaches. Dr. Alice Mbuba, a Nairobi-based political analyst, stated, “Raila’s candidacy represents a significant shift for Africa.
“His leadership could serve as a bridge between the old guard and the emerging forces on the continent. His track record in advocating for economic reforms, democracy, and climate action makes him an ideal candidate to lead the AUC at this pivotal time.”
In addition to campaigning for Raila’s chairmanship, Mudavadi’s visit is designed to align with the broader diplomatic objectives of the Kenyan government, particularly in terms of strengthening the country’s relations with the African Union.
“Kenya’s strategic vision for the continent is rooted in collaboration and inclusivity. Raila, if elected, will ensure that the priorities of all African nations, from the smallest to the largest, are given equal weight,” Mudavadi added.
The Kenyan delegation in Addis Ababa is also expected to engage with various heads of state, diplomats, and African Union officials to garner support for Raila’s candidacy.
“This is an all-hands-on-deck moment for Kenya,” said Makau Mutia, a senior campaign strategist involved in Raila’s bid.
“The support we receive here will not only determine Raila’s success but will also serve as a testament to Kenya’s growing influence in Africa’s multilateral processes.”
The 38th AU Summit will see Kenyan President, H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, attend the gathering of heads of state and government, underscoring Kenya’s commitment to continental leadership. With the theme of “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” the summit will focus on addressing historical injustices and exploring reparative measures for Africa’s diaspora.
This theme is expected to resonate deeply with Raila Odinga’s broader vision for justice and economic transformation across the continent.
“The timing of this summit could not be more critical,” noted Mudavadi. “Raila’s leadership will be integral in advancing a continent-wide agenda that addresses issues such as reparations, youth unemployment, gender equity, and sustainable development. His approach will be holistic, aiming not just for growth, but for justice for all Africans.”
The atmosphere in Addis Ababa is charged with anticipation, as the continent prepares for what promises to be a highly contested election for the AUC chair. Raila Odinga’s campaign has already gained significant traction, particularly among African leaders who see his vision as one that aligns with the pressing needs of the continent. His advocacy for bridging the infrastructural gap and enhancing trade through the AfCFTA aligns with the Union’s goals of deepening economic integration.
As Mudavadi and the Kenyan delegation work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure Raila’s victory, the stakes are high for both Kenya and Africa at large. The outcome of this election will reverberate far beyond the AU Commission, shaping the direction of continental policies for years to come.
With just days remaining before the vote, all eyes are now on Addis Ababa, where the fate of the African Union and its future leadership will be decided. If Raila Odinga succeeds, his tenure could usher in a new era of leadership for Africa—one defined by collaboration, progress, and a collective vision for a better future.
