Gor Mahia fans erupted with chants of joy and wild celebrations following their 1-1 draw that also marked their coronation day against stubborn Posta Rangers in a Sportpesa Kenya Premier League tie staged at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
Gor Mahia, who fielded most of their second string, put their nose infront in the 37th minute through Bernard Ondiek strike following Samuel Onyango’s floated free kick.
The ball smashed onto the bar for Ondiek to tap home the rebound.
Unperturbed, the mailmen put up a gallant show and with a minute to half time, Peter Ng’ang equalized when he rose well to power home a header from Simon Mbugua’s cross in the 44th minute.
Gor Mahia’s appeal for a penalty after Nicholas Kipkirui was sliced down by Rangers keeper and former Gor Mahia custodian Gradus Ochieng was ignored.
Posta’s chance to wrap up the game was wasted by Felix Ochieng who blasted over the bar with a yawning net beckoning.
Cassidy Okeyo missed a great opportunity in the 55th minute, which should have restored Gor Mahia lead but after beating Ochieng, the ball smashed the crossbar.
Felix Oluoch also got a chance to hand Rangers the lead late on but he had a poor touch that saw the ball flying over the bar even as Rangers complained of a handball from Charles Momanyi in the buildup.
Following the draw, Gor are now on 32 points, need at least a point in the final match to ensure they won’t be among the bottom two.
In other results, Mathare United added more woes to their hosts Chemelil Sugar with a slim 1-0 that came courtesy of Chris Ochieng barely after 15min.
