Uganda’s KCCA clinch Cecafa Kagame Cup in Rwanda

Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) FC defeated defending Champions and Tanzanian soccer giants Azam FC 1-0 to win this year’s Cecafa Kagame Cup in Rwanda.

This was KCCA’s second title since 1978 and the first title for Uganda since 2006 when Police FC last won the championship. 

Mustafa Kizza’s 62nd minute saw KCCA walk away with a cash prize of  $30,000 (Ksh.3million) courtesy of President Paul Kagame’s support towards the competition.

This is in addition to $1000 which the Uganda Football Federation (FUFA ) president Moses Magogo promised each member of the team if they win the championship.

The Ugandan champions proved the best of the 16 clubs competing in this tournament after winning in all its seven engagements at the tournament.

KCCA head coach Mike Mutebi was all smiles after the final whistle.’The quality of players in our camp is  never in doubt.We have a lot of good local players in Uganda who have shown true  commitment plying both  in the Uganda Cranes  and local clubs.I feel we deserved to win the trophy but I must admit winning this trophy was  not  an easy affair.All teams were  equal to the ask “Mutebi noted.

The wins were recorded against hosts Mukura Victory and Rayon Sport, plus twice against defending champions Azam, and another over Zambia’s Green Eagles in extra time.

Earlier , Green Eagles of Zambia beat DR Congo’s AS Maniema Union 2-0 to win a third playoff game and also walk away with $20,000 (Ksh.2 million), while As Maniema went home with $10,000(sh,1 million).
