Over 800 employees at Moi University, including lecturers, have received redundancy letters due to an inflated workforce. The affected employees received termination letters from the institution earlier on 15 May 2025.
“Following a review of the University’s operational needs and financial sustainability, your position has been identified as one of those affected by the redundancy process,” read part of the letter sent to the affected employees by Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor Loyce Maru.
The University’s Acting Vice Chancellor Prof Kiplagat Kotut, in an internal memo addressed to the staff on Tuesday, 13 May 2025 informed them of the conclusion of the redundancy exercise paving the way for the staff to collect their dismissal letters.
Professor Kotut requested that the impacted employees pick up their notices of redundancy or retention between Wednesday, 14 May, and Friday, 23 May.
Officials from UASU branches, led by the chapter organizing secretary Jeremiah Ojuki, affirmed the university’s action, which he criticized as unlawful and improper. He revealed that the union has already presented the matter to court, restraining the laying off of the affected workers.
