Kenya’s George Malala is the new Absa Kip Keino Classic shot put champion after throwing a meet record of 16.60 metres during the sixth edition of the World Athletics Continental Gold Tour at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Malala, who achieved the mark on his fifth attempt, thrilled the home crowd with the record-breaking throw at the prestigious event. Malala’s throw of 16.60m not only secured him gold but also set a new personal best (PB).

“I’m happy with the results,” said Malala.

“The rhythm is not there, but I know as we continue it will get to where I want. I want to focus on my technique so that I can first qualify for the African Championships.”

Benson Macharia finished second with a throw of 15.26 metres, narrowly edging Leonard Bett, who placed third at 15.27 metres. Interestingly, Macharia and Bett also took second and third place, respectively, at last year’s event, when then-national champion Peter Mwangi reigned supreme.

The top six finishers at the event recorded either Personal or Season’s best.
