Political earthquake: Impeached DP Gachagua challenges Ruto with new party ahead of 2027 contest

As the political drama unfolds, all eyes are on Gachagua’s next moves. Will he succeed in rallying a significant following to challenge the current administration, or will the government's overtures lure him back into the fold?

In a move that has sent shockwaves through political landscape, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, recently ousted from office, is poised to launch a new political party on 8 February this month.

This development threatens to reshape alliances and poses a significant challenge to President William Ruto as the nation looks ahead to the 2027 General Elections.

The Wamunyoro ‘center of power’ is a really thorn on flesh as a majority of Ruto allies from the votes rich region already feel dethroned as their influence wane day by day.

The hounded DP has succeed in marshalling up his troops with plans afoot to ‘deconstruct’ Ruto-lies and skirmishes to make him a one term President whose main legacy was to’ kill youths and preside over cesspits’.

“As of now, Gachagua is not free to contest for any seats. However,we would be wrong to underestimate his factor in 2027 elections. We fear that, his influence is growing rapidly and with his ‘truthful man ‘slogan and now okoa payslip’ are going in well,”an authoritative source within Kenya Kwanza who sought anonymity intimated.

The source added,” His impeachment has really affected us. Honestly,it was a miscalculation. It’s even worse that majority of projects and policies championed by our boss are not working. He is heedless.”

Gachagua’s impeachment in October 2024 marked an unprecedented event in Kenya’s history. Accused of corruption, incitement of ethnic hatred, and gross misconduct, he was removed from office following a decisive vote in the Senate.

Gachagua, who was hospitalized during the proceedings due to severe chest pains, decried the process as unjust and politically motivated.

“I am innocent of all these charges. My apology to President Ruto yesterday is not an admission of these baseless allegations meant to overturn the will of the people,” he asserted at the time.

Undeterred by his impeachment, Gachagua has been actively mobilizing his supporters, particularly in his home region of Nyeri County. His upcoming party launch is seen as a strategic move to consolidate his base and position himself as a formidable factor in the 2027 elections.

Sources within his camp told Kurunzi News that the new party will focus on addressing issues of corruption, governance, and national unity—ironically, the very areas where he faced allegations.

The emergence of Gachagua’s political ambitions has not gone unnoticed by President Ruto’s administration. Insider reports indicate that there are plans to entice the former deputy president with lucrative offers to abandon his political pursuits.

Didmus Baraza, a close ally of President Ruto, hinted at this strategy, stating, “If we need Gachagua, we’ll bring him back.” This suggests that the government is keen to neutralize any potential threat posed by Gachagua’s return to the political arena.

Gachagua’s impeachment and subsequent political maneuvers have exposed deep rifts within the ruling United Democratic Alliance party. His supporters argue that his removal was orchestrated to suppress dissenting voices within the government.

“This divorce that the President is looking for, he is going to get it; it will be hurtful, it will be catastrophic, and it will have casualties,” warned Nyandarua Senator John Methu during the impeachment proceedings.

As the political drama unfolds, all eyes are on Gachagua’s next moves. Will he succeed in rallying a significant following to challenge the current administration, or will the government’s overtures lure him back into the fold?

One thing is certain: Kenya’s political landscape is set for a period of intense competition and realignment as the 2027 elections approach.
