AFCON 2019: Tricky draw as Kenya land Africa’s best -Senegal, Algeria and Tanzania in Group C

Harambee Stars will play alongside East African neighbours, Tanzania, in Group C. Stars’ opening match will be against old rivals Algeria.

Africa’s best-ranked team, Senegal, will prove a handful for Sebastien Migne’s team as will be North Africa giants Algeria.

Football Kenya Federation president, Nick Mwendwa, who attended the draw accompanied by coach Migne and CEO Robert Muthomi, reacted with a post on his Twitter handle.

Kenya will then play Taifa Stars in the East African derby away from home before wrapping their group action against the Lions of Teranga of Senegal – ranked 23rd in the world and the best on the continent.

Kenya’s last outing at the AFCON in 2004, then guided by Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee, was a disappointing group stage elimination.  They recorded two straight losses before winning against Burkina Faso in the final group stage match.

East Africa’s best, Uganda, will play in Group A alongside hosts – Egypt, Zimbabwe and DR Congo.

Other East African qualifiers Burundi, will face giants Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea.

Group D will feature a Southern Africa derby between South Africa and Namibia, with Cote d’Ivoire and Morocco also involved in the group.

The tournament will kick off on June 21 with hosts Egypt playing Zimbabwe.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the round of 16, alongside four best teams that will finish on third place.
