Betting giant, Sportpesa, says their customers have no reason to panic over the directive by government to suspend mobile wallets for at least 27 companies in the bookmaking industry.
A statement from the firm said the firm had obtained orders against the directive pending resolution of the matter, adding they “continue to address the licensing matter with industry regulators and stakeholders”.
“Sportpesa is a law abiding corporate citizen that upholds all tax and regulatory requirements. In the meantime the High Court has issued an order that allows Sportpesa to continue operations uninterrupted until the matter is resolved and therefore all our paybills and other services remain operational,” read the statement, also published on their social media platforms.
Government, through the Betting Control and Licensing Board, had written to telecommunications companies directing that pay bills and short codes of 27 betting companies, including Sportpesa and Betin, be suspending until further notice.
Gamcode, trading as Betin, also obtained orders restraining government from any action that affect their business pending the hearing of their petition in the High Court on 16 July 2019.
