Returning Paul Were inspires Leopards to 10th place after Rangers win

A returning Paul Were was impressive AFC Leopards, assisting Whyvonne Isuza’s goal which helped Ingwe see off Posta Rangers 3-1 at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.

Leopards are now 10th on the log following the Thursday afternoon win.

AFC had to come from a goal down after Ken Nambute’s early opener before Brian Marita’s deflected shot took Ingwe level and skipper Robinson Kamura giving them a 2-1 lead at half time.

Were, who rejoined the den on a short term deal, showed flashes of his former as he switched flanks and delivered the ball for Isuza to hand Leopards the lead.

Dominant Ingwe then had another chance but Brian Mariita failed to capitalize on Rangers’ goalkeeper’s gift of the ball, taking too long to make a decision to allow the defenders to close in on him and block his effort.

Leopards doubled their tally, five minutes before the break, Robinson Kamura curling home a seemingly harmless free-kick past Lule in Rangers’ goal.

And they made it 3-1, two minutes after the restart when Isuza scored his fourth goal in as many matches with an easy tap in from a yard out after Lule missed his dive to punch away Were’s free-kick from the left.

Posta, who just like last season are fighting relegation got off to a good start, Nambute making the most of a defensive blip to put his side ahead after just four minutes.

But that lead was shortlived as Marita restored parity five minutes later when his shot from inside the box was deflected past Martin Lule, who had punched Kamura’s free-kick into his path.

From then on, Leopards looked formidable and some good team play Isuza, Isaac Kipyegon and Were pivotal to holding possession.

The sensational winger was then rested for another new signing Boniface Mukhekhe as the tempo of the game under scorching conditions went down until the end of the tie.
