In an unprecedented political movement, a coalition of Generation Z activists, members of Bunge La Mwananchi, a section of the clergy, and various councils of elders across Kenya are calling for the candidature of Professor Fred Ogola as the next United Nations Secretary-General.
The diverse alliance cites his extensive academic background and strategic economic insights as the cornerstone of their support, envisioning a transformative leadership at the helm of the UN.
Prodigious academic journey
Prof Ogola’s academic credentials are nothing short of remarkable. He holds “one Doctorate, two master’s degrees, five undergraduate degrees, and 16 additional certifications”, to make 24 a total of academic accolades.
“And it is not only about the certificates; I have earned them from some of the best institutions in the world,” he said in an interview.
Beyond his academic achievements, Prof Ogola has made significant contributions to the fields of economics and strategic management. He serves as the deputy vice chancellor at Uzima University and is the director of its Business School.
His leadership extends to his role as the CEO of the Africa Health and Economic Initiative, where he has been instrumental in driving policies aimed at integrating health and economic development across the continent.
Grassroots momentum and support
The movement supporting Professor Ogola’s candidacy is notably driven by Kenya’s youth, particularly Gen Z, who view his leadership as a beacon of hope for progressive change.
A prominent Gen Z activist says “Professor Ogola embodies the fusion of academic excellence and practical solutions, [and] his vision aligns with the aspirations of the younger generation for a more equitable and just global society.”
Members of Bunge La Mwananchi, a grassroots people’s parliament, have also thrown their weight behind Prof Ogola, one of the members saying that “his deep understanding of economic strategies and commitment to social justice make him the ideal candidate to represent not just Kenya but the Global South on the world stage.”
Kurunzi News understands that there is growing support from religious leaders, including Imams and representatives from various faiths, who have expressed their support, citing Prof Ogolla’s integrity and dedication to ethical leadership.
Professor Ogola’s supporters emphasize his unique blend of academic prowess and practical experience as essential qualities for the role of UN Secretary-General. They argue that his background equips him to address complex global challenges, from economic disparities to health crises.
Power of faith
“The world is at a crossroads where informed and strategic decision-making is paramount. My commitment is to leverage my academic and professional experiences to foster global policies that are inclusive and sustainable,” Prof Ogolla says.
Among his credentials is his publication – Strategic Thinking: 10 Lessons from 1000 Strategic Plans, which underscores his approach to problem-solving on a macro scale. The book delves into methodologies for carrying visions to full fruition and exercising the power of faith to overcome the impossible, aiming to release supernatural purposes into one’s life.
The path to the UN’s top position is fraught with challenges. The selection process for the Secretary-General involves intricate geopolitical negotiations and endorsements from multiple nation-states.
Prof Ogolla’s support movement is hoping to harness the power of social media, with campaigns highlighting his candidature and credentials. Hashtags such as #Ogola4UNSG and #KenyanScholarForUN have started gaining traction in a bid to amplify the campaign’s reach both locally and internationally.
