Tusker FC defender Alex Onchwari says he is focused on securing a starting berth at the club following his maiden appearance.
The former Muhoroni Youth and Zoo fc player earned his debut at the Ruaraka side on Sunday in a barren draw against KCB. He joined the side on July 2024.
Speaking of his seven-months long wait before earning his debut, Onchwari said he bid his time with patience and remained focus.
“I’m incredibly thankful to have finally earned the chance to play. I’m grateful to the technical bench for believing in me and giving me the opportunity. I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long, and it’s finally here. I’ll keep working hard to make sure I stay in the team,” Onchwari told the club’s media.
“I always knew my chance would come eventually, and I never gave up, even when I wasn’t getting minutes. I stayed patient and never had any regrets. I kept working hard and staying ready for whenever I was needed,” he added.
Tusker coach Charles Okere has heaped praise on Onchwari, urging him to work harder to secure a permanent spot in the starting lineup. Okere also emphasized that every player has their moment and expressed satisfaction with Onchwari’s performance.
“Onchwari is an important player in our defence. In our match against KCB he delivered a strong performance. However, at Tusker, we don’t rely on just one player, we count on the entire squad,” Okere said.
“Every player has their time, and I’m glad his has come. He utilized it well, and as a coach, I encourage him to keep pushing for more game time this season,” he added.
Against KCB, Onchwari was handed a starting role stepping in for the injured Tom Teka this is after a seven-month wait since joining the Brewers in July last year.
Onchwari impressed with a solid defensive display, helping the team secure its sixth clean sheet of the season.
Onchwari, who began his football career with local side Ololulung’a, also played the full 90 minutes in Tusker’s most recent match against Kenya Police FC, helping the team keep yet another clean sheet.
