ODM withdraws from Wajir West by-election, cites Jubilee goodwill gesture

The Orange Democratic Movement has gone against its earlier decision and says it will not field a candidate in the Wajir-West by-elections, scheduled for April 25th.

Suna East MP June Mohammed, the party’s director of elections, said in a statement they had reached the decision as a goodwill gesture to Jubilee Party, who had opted out of the mini-polls in Migori, Ugenya and Embakasi East.

“Just as Jubilee did in the three recent by-elections, ODM will not take sides in the contest in Wajir West. We wish victory to the best candidate,” said June.

Former minister, Mohammed Elmi, was the orange party’s candidate and it remains to be seen how the decision by ODM will play out in the coming days.

The party has been under sharp political after losing in Ugenya and Embakasi East, with many a critic saying time had come for Raila Odinga to shore up internal democracy to save the party from further embarrassment.
