No fatalities as fire razes 20th Century Plaza ground floor

There was panic at 20th Century Plaza following a fire incident that destroyed Flush Drycleaners premises and several other shops on the ground floor.

Two people were seriously injured during the incident, others suffering minor cuts and bruises. Nairobi City County fire engines arrived at the scene within 20 minutes, evacuating the nearby buildings as they contained the fire.

The fire was started by an explosion from one of the machines inside the laundry before spreading to other shops, including the forex bureaus at the building.

John Opiri, a security guard says the explosion had been preceded by a pungent smell from the laundry.

“Nilikuwa nimesimama kwa mpango na kulikuwa na harufu kama kitu inaungua halafu nikasikia mlipuko ikafuatwa na moto, ” he said.

The injured were working at the laundry and were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital.
