Muthaiga police boss interdicted over Itumbi family photos

Muthaiga OCS Alphonse Kimengwa has been interdicted for allowing people visiting Dennis Itumbi pose for photos with him in the cells.

Itumbi, a journalist based at Deputy President William Ruto’s office, is remanded at the station following his arrest on Wednesday.

He was arraigned on Thursday, when police were allowed five days to finalize investigations on allegations that he authored a fake letter on the DP’s alleged assassination plot.

Itumbi denies involvement in the letter, instead claiming he had video evidence of a hotel meeting where the plot was allegedly discussed.

On Thursday, Itumbi requested Judge Zainabu Abdul to allow him present the video in court, but the Milimani Senior Resident Magistrate decline.

He told the court that detectives had attempted to coerce him to admit that he authored the letter alluding to an assassination plot against DP Ruto.

Itumbi is said to be a member of a 256-member WhatsApp group comprising of politicians, bloggers and DP Ruto’s supporters, where the letter was circulated.

Yvonne Anyango a senior detective from the Serious Crimes Unit of the DCI told the court police were investigation the chat room. Members of the social media group are also due for questioning.

Cabinet Secretaries Peter Munya (Trade), Sicily Kariuki (Health) and Joe Mucheru (ICT) and 20 other government officials were summoned to the DCI headquarters late June to record statements following claims that they had attended the controversial meeting at La Mada hotel in Nairobi.

The three CSs distanced themselves from claims they were planning to assassinate Ruto, Munya terming the reports baseless.
