The Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, has held a high-level meeting with the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Mudavadi, who is in the US for a series of meetings with the Donald Trump-led government, arrived in the US on Tuesday, 6 May 2025.
On Thursday, 8 onMay 2025, Mudavadi revealed the details of his meeting with Rubio, even as Kenya seeks to strengthen its ties with the US.
Mudavadi says among the issues he discussed with Rubio include regional peace and security, expanded trade and investment, and deepened diplomatic engagement.
“Kenya and the United States continue to build on decades of shared values and strategic cooperation. In Washington, D.C., I held a high-level meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State, Senator Marco Rubio where we discussed regional peace and security, expanded trade and investment, and deepened diplomatic engagement,” Mudavadi stated.
The two officials also explored ways of implementing the Kenya-US Free Trade Agreement and the peace talks in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“We emphasized the need to fast-track the Kenya–U.S. Free Trade Agreement. I also briefed the U.S. on the ongoing East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC)-led peace efforts in the DRC, including the involvement of five Heads of State,” Mudavadi added.
The Prime CS has also revealed that they discussed the Kenya-led mission to Haiti, which is seeking to neutralize gang violence in the Carribean country.
“Sen. Rubio reaffirmed U.S. support for Kenya’s leadership on regional stability, democratic governance, and the Kenya-led MSS Mission in Haiti. He also expressed keen interest in visiting Kenya to further strengthen our strategic partnership,” he added.
Mudavadi was joined by Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Korir Sing’oei, President William Ruto’s National Security Advisor Monica Juma, Ambassador David Kerich, and sador Christopher Kirigua.
