Kirinyaga health woes continue as facilities lack basics

Patients at Kang’aru Dispensary are forced to seek laboratory services outside the health facility despite the services being free.

This is after a shortage of reagents that are used for results determination.

Speaking to Kurunzi, a worker in the facility, who sought anonymity, disclosed that even the pharmacy was operating with panadols, cough syrups and actals only.

“The patients are forced to buy medicines from private pharmacies which are very expensive and are charged nearly triple the dispensary fee,” a patient told Kurunzi.

“We are told to go to another laboratory then after the results are out, we bring them back so that they can prescribe medicines for us. Then we go to a chemist in town to buy them.”

The managements was not ready to answer our questions.

Things have started falling apart in the health sector in Kirinyaga county where Kerugoya Level Four Hospital has been in crisis since 20 April after the county government fired 346 casuals.

A spot-check by Kurunzi shows some workers still struggling with cleaning stained floors and toilet walls and floors.

The Kirinyaga County government is yet to offer a statement on the issue in the failed health sector.
