In the early hours of Friday morning, suspected Al Shabaab terrorists allegedly launched simultaneous attacks on three separate Mandera County locations.
In the initial assault, terrorists assaulted police officers guarding a Safaricom mast about 15 kilometers from Elwak Police Station in the Iresuki area.
According to a police report seen by Citizen Digital, “At around 0130 hours National Police Reservist (NPR) Abdirahman Bashir, who was among those manning Iresuki Safaricom mast, reported via phone call that they had been overpowered by suspected Al Shabaab Militants and that the Safaricom mast was being destroyed.”
Soon after, attempts to contact Bashir on the same phone number he had used to call for help were unsuccessful. The police report states that it was also impossible to call his coworkers.
“We don’t know where they are right now. At the same time, Wargadud Police Station was reportedly under siege by Al-Shabaab insurgents,” said the police report.
According to the police investigation, “in an effort to corroborate the facts, KDF stationed at Elwak also confirmed that at or near that same time, they were attacked at their camp by suspected Al Shabaab militants.”
As a result, there is a network loss between the police stations in Wargadud and Elwak.
The breadth of the attacks is currently being investigated into the disparate but obviously coordinated instances.
If any police or KDF officers were hurt or killed during the occurrences, it has not yet been determined.
