Harambee Stars knocked out of 2019 Afcon as Benin draw with Cameron

Harambee Stars hopes of sailing to the last 16 in the on-going 2019 Africa Cup of Nations were dashed after Cameroon were held to a barren draw by Benin in a pulsating Group F match at the Ismailia Stadium.

The Kenyans, who started the day occupying the final third best placed teams position, could have made it to the last 16 if Cameroon beat Benin and Angola lost to Mali later on Tuesday.

Despite sailing through as one of the four best third-placed teams, Benin went must wait to find out their next opponents.

Harambee Stars shot against their foot despite  making it for the first time in history of the competition after losing 3-0 to Senegal in their final Group C match on Monday at the 30 June Stadium.

Kenya will now return home to prepare for the upcoming African Nations Championships qualifiers where they face neighbours Tanzania in a two-legged tie at the end of this month.

The qualification of Senegal raised to 10 the number of teams who have secured places in the second round, which kicks off Friday.

Hosts Egypt, surprise side Madagascar, Algeria and Morocco advanced as group winners and Uganda, Nigeria, Senegal and the Ivory Coast as runners-up.

Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo have filled two of the spots reserved for the best four third-place teams.
