Benson Mutura: Ex-Makadara MP elected Nairobi County Assembly Speaker

Former Makadara Member of Parliament Benson Mutura has been sworn in as the Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly.

Mutura was elected with 99 votes.

All the other five contestants; Abdi Ali Abdi, Ken Ng’ondi, Washington Makodingo, Allan Chacha Mang’era and Mike Obonyo Guoro got no votes.

Mutura’s candidature was backed by both the Jubilee Party and Orange Democratic Movement.

ODM MCAs met on Friday morning at a Nairobi hotel and resolved to back Mutura saying their party would produce the deputy speaker in line with the Building Bridges Initiative.

The Jubilee Party had held a meeting at the headquarters with it’s Nairobi MCAs on Thursday, where Secretary General Raphael Tuju announced the endorsement of Mutura.

Mutura takes over the seat from Beatrice Elachi who resigned amidst a chaotic leadership tussle between Governor Mike Sonko and Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) Director General Mohammed Badi.

Sonko and Badi have since called a truce brokered by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
